Piano Adventures. Level 1

After the Primer, students begin the Level 1 four core books. Theory and Technique Books correlate page-by-page with the Lesson Book to analyze, create, and express at the piano. Note reading expands across the Grand Staff with themes of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, folk tunes, and Faber originals. Musicianship is built with improvisations, harmonizations, and sightreading.

Piano Adventures. Level 1

The 2nd Edition Level 1 Lesson Book introduces all the notes of the grand staff, elementary chord playing, and the concept of tonic and dominant notes. Students play in varied positions, reinforcing reading skills and recognizing intervals through the 5th. Musicianship is built with the introduction of legato and staccato touches. This level continues the interval orientation to reading across the full range of the Grand Staff. The 5-finger approach is presented here in a fresh, musically appealing way.

Piano methods books provide a structured system to help teach people of all skill levels how to play the instrument. Whether working with an instructor, or learning on your own, you will most likely use some kind of method book.

NLS holds many braille piano instruction books in its collection, which are available for loan to eligible U.S citizens enrolled in the program. We recommend that beginning pianists select current method books, whether studying with a teacher or on their own.

Published by Kjos Music Company in San Diego, James Walter Bastien's piano methods books numbered over 300 at the time of his death. The Bastien method is notable in that he refrains from teaching beginning pianist how to read music notation. Instead, Bastien teaches students to play simple tunes by placing their hands on designated keys and following a set of numbered finger patterns.
